I post-produced this magical mystery tour starring “The King of Bollywood” Shah Rukh Khan
which was a follow-up to a campaign that Special Guest created in partnership with Sagmeister-Walsh in 2015, which gets a subtle shout-out when SRK, as he is known to millions of Indians, intones the phrase “suckita lickita?” while licking a doorknob.
While ECD Aaron Duffy and director Karim Charlebois-Zariffa worked successfully to raise the volume pictorially speaking, Indian production company Ransom brought the big guns with a big old set build. The design was so flat and angular that when I was first shown stills in a discussion about set extension I initially mistook them for 3D renderings. Post production work included set extensions/cloning/modification as well as miscellaneous and various composites required by the fact that SRK had to be filmed on a separate day from the rest of the actors (because Superstar). Props to Ransom for maintaining an extremely tidy set – barely any post cleanup needed, which in a whiteworld scenario is impressive.
A couple of stills below from the shoot in India give a sense of the size of the build:
At one point the creative team contemplated taking “Frootiworld” to an even wackier level – below is an unreleased, WIP iteration that we took to calling the “Mental Version”.
